Mobile macro: Travel apps bounce back, Social apps remain strong, and retail trends are mixed

  • Travel bounces back– most travel and entertainment apps improved in April, with airlines, OTAs and hotels all trending positively. The biggest outliers are Dave & Busters (+59% YoY) and AMC (-46% YoY)
  • Social apps strong – META downloads spiked up to +235% YoY, driven by Threads. Snapchat downloads turned positive, up +6% YoY, while Pinterest downloads decelerated but have been strong in recent months.   
  • Retail trends mixed – Ecommerce downloads improved but remained negative (led by Temu downloads -5% YoY) and athletic wear apps were -10% YoY (though some dispersion between apps – Nike and Adidas negative, Lululemon +22% YoY).

Travel bounces back – Travel app downloads bounced back in April, with year-over-year trend improving to -6%, up from -13% in March. Most travel apps improved in April, with Airlines, OTAs, and hotel apps all trending positively. The biggest outliers for entertainment apps were Dave & Busters (+59% YoY) and AMC (-46% YoY).

Social apps strong in April – META downloads spiked up to +235% YoY, driven by Threads. Snapchat downloads turned positive, up +6% YoY, while Pinterest downloads decelerated but have been strong in recent months.

Retail trends mixed – Ecommerce downloads improved but remain negative at -3% (Temu -5% YoY), Furniture & homegoods apps flipped negative (-4% YoY), and Athletic wear apps are -10% YoY (have been negative each month YTD) – though some dispersion between apps – Nike and Adidas negative, Lululemon +22% YoY.

Round up of additional trends – Sportsbook apps trended positively in April (+25% YoY), Dating apps bounced back to flat YoY after falling in March, and EdTech apps spiked to +25% YoY led by Duolingo.
